Yodeck runs on the Raspberry Pi 5, but a few features perform differently than on the Raspberry Pi 4, which is still our recommended Yodeck Player. Check these limitations before you choose a Pi 5 for your screens.
At a glance
| Feature | Status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-zone layouts with dynamic content | ⚠️ Limited performance | Layouts with several dynamic zones play slowly and can lag. Layouts with one dynamic zone work fine. |
| Color depth setting | 🕒 Temporarily unavailable | Color depth is fixed at 16-bit and can’t be changed yet. |
| Screenshots in 4K | 🕒 Temporary issue | When the portal takes a screenshot of a 4K screen, video and tickers pause briefly. |
Multi-zone layouts
The Raspberry Pi 5 struggles when a layout includes more than one dynamic zone playing simultaneously. Dynamic content includes:
- Videos and tickers
- Web pages with moving content, such as videos or GIFs
- Heavy apps such as Power BI, Google Slides and apps that play video
Static content, such as images, text and clocks, doesn’t cause the problem.
💡 Planning multi-zone layouts? Keep to one dynamic zone per layout on a Pi 5, or use a Raspberry Pi 4 for those screens.
Temporary limitations
We’re working on these and will update this page when they’re resolved:
- Color depth: fixed at 16-bit. The color depth option in screen settings has no effect on a Pi 5.
- 4K screenshots: taking a screenshot of a 4K screen from the portal briefly pauses video and ticker playback.
Why isn’t the Pi 5 the default Yodeck Player?
For digital signage, the Raspberry Pi 4 still offers the best balance of performance, reliability and cost across all Yodeck features. Read the full reasoning in our blog post, Yodeck and the Raspberry Pi 5.
